Low energy consumption backery oven

Bread baking requires a large quantity of energy – roughly 2 to 5 Mjoules /kg that is 2 to 3 times higher than the energy required for the same mass of a food product in the form of canned food for example. Furthermore food habits are changing in the world : we see in most European countries a decreasing consumption of bakery products at home while the consumption of bakery products outside home increases significantly. This market trend is supported by specific technologies such as partial baking of bread which are refreshed (second baking) in baking stations or in restaurants. There is thus a need to develop low energy demanding equipments.

Compounds for the treatment of mitochondrial diseases

The present invention relates to the isolation and development of drugs to treat mitochondrial pathologies involving a deficiency in ATP production via the oxidative phosphorylation pathway, such as NARP syndrome. NARP (Neuropathy, Ataxia and Retinitis Pigmentosa) is a maternally transmitted hereditary syndrome characterized by retarded development, and accompanied by retinitis pigmentosa (RP), dementia, ataxia, proximal neurological muscle weakness and sensory neuropathies. The clinical manifestations are varied and can take more or less severe forms. Thus, the ophthalmic manifestations can range from a simple "salt and pepper" changing of the retina to severe RP, accompanied by maculopathy. Similarly, there is a broad 15 spectrum of neurological manifestations, which ranges from simple migraines to severe dementia and to "Leigh's disease". Many retinitis pigmentosa related syndromes exist, such as Usher's syndrome in which both the sight and the hearing are affected, or else macular dystrophy, also called inverse RP.

Protein involved in dna replication, and modulation of its activity

Although DNA replication is a vital process for cell growth and its mechanism is highly conserved, recent studies also reveal significant diversity in origin structure, assembly of pre-replication complex (pre-RC) and regulation of replication initiation along evolutionary lines. It is crucial to maintain genomic integrity in eukaryotic cells. During DNA replication, errors in pre-RC assembly often result in substantial changes in the amount of genetic material, which will cause cell death, or transform cells to become malignant tumors. The first origin recognition complex (ORC) proteins were purified from cell extracts as a heterohexameric complex that specifically binds to origins of DNA replication and the subunits were named Orc1 through Orc6.

One step in-situ graphene oxide reduction in composite

It is well known that electrical or thermal properties of graphene are of importance in composites for applications like anti-static composites, biomedical, organic electronics, sensors… but the mixing of graphene in polymers is not easy. It has thus been proposed to mix graphene oxide (GO), a graphene derivative which by contrast to neat graphene can be easily processed, with the organic matrix and then to reduce it. This reduction step is performed to restore, at least partially, the properties of graphene. It has a critical influence on the properties of the final material. One reduction route is to heat the composite in order to reduce the GO in rGO but the maximum temperature is limited due to the organic matrix. Other ways like exposition to hydrazine hydrate at 100°C 24h, H2 plasma or IR xenon flash lamp have been proposed. Each of these having detrimental influence on the final composite and none of these allowing to efficiently restore the graphene properties.

High purity hydrogen production from steel slags

Hydrogen can be produced in several ways. However, known methods all exhibit drawbacks. They are either expensive, high energy consuming or produce greenhouse gases. Hydrogen purity is also paramount. If hydrogen is to be used in hydrogen fuel cells, high degree of purity is indeed critical as even trace amounts of impurities present in the hydrogen can poison the anode, membrane, and cathode of the fuel cell resulting in performance drops. These past years, new routes were investigated to produce hydrogen. It was eventually proposed to produce hydrogen by thermochemical decomposition of water using steel slags. Although the proposed process offers a way to valorize steel slags, it produces hydrogen of low purity and may present safety risk as H2 may explode at the working temperature. There remains then a demand for a method that would allow producing high purity hydrogen at low cost without greenhouse gases emissions and which could advantageously allow valorizing attractively steel slags.

Ispinach: an optimized fluorogenic rna aptamer

The recent development of new fluorogenic dyes and the concomitant isolation of specific RNA aptamers offer the possibility to monitor in real-time the synthesis of a specific RNA both in vitro and in vivo. Among this new generation of dyes, the 3,5-difluoro-4-hydroxybenzylidene imidazolinone (DFHBI), a commercially available dye mimicking the natural fluorophore of the green fluorescent protein, proved to be particularly well suited for live-cell imaging as it is nontoxic, cell membrane-permeable, does not interact with cell components and has a low fluorescence in it is free state. These attractive properties led to the isolation of a first DFHBI-binding aptamer termed Spinach. While Spinach was able to enhance DFHBI fluorescence more than ~2000 times upon binding, it however suffered from several limitations such as limited folding efficiency and thermal instability. These limitations were partly overcome in a second version of the aptamer (Spinach2) obtained by rational design.

Global vision system for laparoscopic surgery

In a laparoscopic surgery, the endoscope and instruments are inserted inside the abdominal wall through small hollow cylinders called trocars. The trocars are equipped with seals that maintain the gas inside the abdominal cavity while instruments are introduced through the abdominal wall. The global vision system is an “augmented trocar” comprising two mini-cameras like the ones that can be found on a cellphone. An extraction and housing system permits their deployment around the trocar’s cylinder and their folding for an easy and quick extraction. The global vision system cameras’ are positioned to provide a wider field of view compared to the endoscope alone (see Figure 1). This field of view enlargement is all the more important that the endoscope is deeply inserted inside the abdominal cavity (this is often the case when the surgeon performs a task requiring precision and detail).

Frequency selective light coupling and decoupling device

The invention concerns a frequency selective light coupling and decoupling device based on a multimode photonic crystal waveguide. If a signal is injected on its fundamental mode, it is converted into a higher-order mode inside the structure. Then, this higher-order mode is outcoupled without perturbing the fundamental mode by thinning to a few rows the lateral photonic crystal cladding on one side (or both sides). The wave leaks as a local plane wave that can be channelled to the next device on a chip. Multiple channels are implemented at successive locations along the waveguide by simply varying the width of the waveguide (or the axial period of the photonic crystal), once every 10 to 100 crystal periods typically, and possibly by providing short “dead zones” between such sections to celan up the signal. The system may also be used as a combiner (reciprocity) or as a wavelength monitor if photodiodes are implemented monolithically at the selected channel positions, just aside the waveguide.
